Hyundai Nexo Specifications & Features

SUVs have overrun the market over the past few years, but the 2023 Hyundai Nexo is no average crossover. The Nexo’s hydrogen-fuel cell electric drivetrain sets it apart from the enormous sea of SUVs. The Nexo, like its closest competition, the Toyota Mirai, uses hydrogen to power its electric motors instead of electricity, which means that filling up its tanks only takes about five minutes. With this, you can go up to 380 miles without emitting any pollution, and filling up is far quicker than charging an EV. However, the Nexo is constrained by a weak infrastructure, with hydrogen refueling stations being difficult, if not impossible, to locate outside of California. As a result, Hyundai only offers the Nexo for sale in the Golden State, keeping the product in a somewhat specialized market.

What’s New?

The Nexo is carried over to 2023 unmodified, with the addition of a common 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster for 2022. Since its release in 2019, the Nexo hasn’t seen many modifications, although larger alterations are anticipated for 2024. The five-passenger 2023 Hyundai Nexo’s interior spaciousness is comparable to other compact crossovers. Adults can ride in the front or back seats with ease. A good 30 cubic feet of cargo capacity is available behind the back seat, and 57 cubic feet are obtained when the rear seats are folded flat, which is nearly as much space as the Hyundai Tucson provides.

The Hyundai Nexo’s electric motor, rated at 161 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque, is powered by a 40-kWh battery pack and a 95-kW fuel-cell stack. AWD is not offered; instead, the powertrain drives the front axles through a single-speed gearbox. In our tests, the Nexo outperformed the Mirai with a 0-60 MPH time of 8.4 seconds. The Hyundai, which runs on hydrogen fuel, can now keep up with conventional, gasoline-powered compact crossovers thanks to this acceleration number. Like its fuel-cell siblings, the Nexo isn’t particularly exciting to drive. Yet, its electrically assisted steering is calibrated properly; it feels solid but is on the light side. The Nexo stopped from 70 mph in 169 feet during our testing, which is substantially better than the Mirai. According to estimates, the base Nexo Blue has a range of 380 miles while cruising. The Limited’s estimated range is 354 miles less due to its greater weight and 19-inch wheels.

The two Nexo trims have slightly differing EPA MPGe ratings. The Nexo Limited is rated at 57 MPGe, while the Blue gets a combined 61 MPGe. It takes roughly five minutes to refuel at a hydrogen station once you locate one. For the first three years, everybody who purchases or leases a Nexo receives free hydrogen fuel, which is equal to $13,000 worth of fuel.

The Nexo comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hyundai’s Blue Link app includes remote engine starting and a hydrogen-fuel station location, among other linked functions. The first three years of Blue Link are free. In addition to a wireless smartphone charging pad, there are two USB charging ports.

The Nexo does not come with any factory options. The primary distinction between the two trim levels is that the Limited comes equipped with more luxuries, such as a hands-free power liftgate, an extra-large sunroof, ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, Hyundai’s blind-spot view monitor, a 360-degree camera, a remote parking feature, and an improved Krell audio system. These features, in our opinion, make the Limited’s higher price point worthwhile.

Conclusion

The Nexo offers environmentally friendly transportation, however, it is constrained by its high cost and the limits of an underdeveloped infrastructure for hydrogen fuel. Fast refueling, no emissions from the tailpipe, and a comfortable and roomy cabin. Good luck locating a hydrogen station outside of California; they are significantly more expensive than petrol-driven SUVs.
